The Eigen Hulp Cooperative Store
The famous cooperative department store Eigen Hulp (“mutual help”) was established in 1890. One of the big cooperative department in Batavia, had customers to be mainly government employees and other civilians.
The concept of “cooperative” store was that customers who spent more than a certain amount each year would receive a rebate equivalent to a percentage of their expenditure. This scheme proved to be very popular among Batavia’s consumers.
Eigen Hulp offered a wide range of fashion and household merchandise. The second smaller branch of Eigen Hulp is specialized in furniture.
Eigen Hulp sales are increasing every year and still continue to operate in business in 1925. but by 1929 the Eigen Hulp was no longer operating.
