Chinese House At West Molenvliet

Chinese house at west molenvliet, was probably built in the latter part of the  18th century. It is one of the grandest chinese houses ever seen in Batavia. Has belonged to the Khouw family for many years ,possibly until 1946.

The Khouw family was a family of great wealth and position at that time. Khouw family  was clearly a highly regarded member of Batavia’s Chinese community.

Khouw Kim An apparently died in 1946 and the house came in to the possession of a son who either sold or donated it to a Chinese social and educational organization called Sin Ming Hui, which was also known as Chandra Naya. For almost the next half century , Chandra Naya operated a school and a medical clinic from this site.

Around 1992, the Chandra Naya building was sold to a private developer who planned to demolish  it and erect an office and apartment  complex on the site. However, widespread  protest  led to a compromise being reached where by the main building of the old house. construction proceeded on this basis until the developer suffered severe financial losses during the economic  crisis which began in Indonesia in mid-1977.
